The Chapter of Patience

Patience is of three types. Patience through Allah, patience for Allah and patience with Allah.

As for the first: it is to rely on Him and to view Him as the One Who grants patience, and that patience is from Him and not through one’s own efforts. For He SWT says:

وَاصْبِرْ وَمَا صَبْرُكَ إِلَّا بِاللَّـهِ ۚ

And be patient, and your patience is not but through Allah.

As for the second [sabr for Allah):  it is that the slave’s drive towards patience is the love of Allah, wanting His Pleasure and seeking closeness to Him, not a mere display of strength seeking praise of the creation.

The third (Sabr with Allah): the slave’s ability to hold steadfast onto Allah’s commands and leaving His prohibitions.

A righteous man was asked, what is patience? He replied: It is to swallow bitterness without a frown.

Another said: It is to adhere to noble etiquettes in the face of trials.

Another said: It is to train the self to battle against that which is disliked (by Allah).

Another said: It is to hold steadfast to the commands of the Quran and Sunnah.

Another said: It is to abandon complaint.

الصبر مثل اسمه مر مذاقته… لكن عواقبه احلى من العسل

Patience is bitter like its name…but its end results are sweeter than honey
